
Types of Sheep Jobs
There are many sheep jobs in Australia, you will be able to find them in most states, your big stations are generally in Southern WA, Southern QLD and SA. You will find smaller but still large operations in NSW and VIC. Most Sheep operations generally include food and accommodation with some exceptions.
Station Hand
Also known as a Jackaroo or Jillaroo this is your base level job. If you're inexperienced this will be the best job for you to look for/start in. This job requires all aspects of station work, stock, fencing, machinery operating, feeding, yard work, shearing, lambing, mustering, ect. Its a great job to learn a wide range of skills.
Shearer
This job is great for people who enjoy a fast paced job with regular breaks, great music and a decent feed. Shearing is when you remove the wool on a sheep with shears. You get paid per sheep so the harder you work the more you get paid. The enrgy in shearing sheds is great with loud music playing while you work
Rousty/Wool Pressing
Rousting/Wool Pressing is a wool handing job. Your job is to get the wool off the shearers and divide it into where it needs to go, you will learn how to throw a fleece and how to skirt it. A wool pressers job is to get all the wool into the packs, closed up and put together for collection. They are both fast paced job with regular breaks and loud music.
Stud
Stud work is a great job for someone who is a bit more knitty gritty about their Sheep Stud work is breeding the best of the best sheep to sell to other places to then enhance their mob. Your job is similar to one of a station hand however things like ram sales, joining stock, book work, meeting clients, ect, are also things you will do
Lamb Marking
This is a seasonal job which involves catching lambs, vaccinating, ear tagging, castrating, removing the tail, drafting, ect. With a good crew this job is enjoyable as a good yarn and tunes are common. This is a job that is easy to learn.
