Types of Cattle Jobs

There are many cattle jobs in Australia, you will be able to find them in every state but your big stations are generally in WA, NT, QLD and North SA. You will find smaller but still large operations in South SA and NSW and much smaller ones in VIC. Large and Medium cattle operations generally include food and accomidation with some exeptions.

Station Hand

Also known as a Jackaroo or Jillaroo this is your base level job. If you're inexperienced this will be the best job for you to look for/start in. This job requires all aspects of station work, stock, fencing, yard building, machinery operating, feeding, yard work, mustering, ect. Its a great job to learn a wide range of skills.

Feed Lot

Feed lot work is great for people who love horse work. Most places require you to own between 1-4 horses. Your job can include things such as monitoring stock, diognosing sicknesses, animal husbandry, cutting stock, feeding out, maintance, loading and unloading stock, ect.

Ringer

This job is generally all aspects of mustering with exceptions. Most ringers jobs require cattle experience and mustering skills on horses, motorbikes or buggies. This job requires mustering cattle, yard work, building yards, loading trucks, ect.

Stud

Stud work is a great job for someone who is a bit more knitty gritty about their cattle. Stud work is breeding the best of the best cattle to sell to other places to then enhance their herd. Your job is similar to one of a station hand however things like bull sales, joining stock, book work, meeting clients, ect, are also things you will do

Droving

If camping under the stars by a camp fire is your thing droving is something you may be interested in. Droving is moving cattle from area to area to allow grazing. This can be done via ute, horses, dogs or bikes, however most drovers use horses. This job is long hours and generally quiet work.
